Psst… the secret to growing your email list over the holidays is freebies.
Wait, that is no secret and it isn’t just going to work for the holidays. Giving away good material for free is key is setting up a great email list. And, as I discussed in 3 Ways to Use Lead Magnets and Freebies, giving away something you know your customers will love will grow your list exponentially and a great list means revenue.
“But Shelagh, what do I give away and why would anyone want something from me in exchange for an email address and name?”
Simple. Think back to your intention. Who is your ideal client and what problem are you solving for them?
Now give them something that you haven’t already provided that guides them to your saleable item and solves their problem.

First, take stock and hit your analytics.
In there you will be able to determine where your customers are landing on your site to begin. Figure out with page is your key attraction and determine what problem that page solves for people. What do you have to offer that compliments that page and you can give away for free?
Consistency of message and presence will have your website working when you are not. A great freebie can build your list by 75 qualified leads a week. Can you afford not to make time to do this?
Here are 10 Ways to Grow Your Email List Over the Holidays*
1. Downloadable PDFs.
Do you have a full colour recipe card with your family specialty? Do you have a list of companies that supply childcare while you shop? Can you put together a calendar of sayings you love or tips and tricks that your customers need? All of these freebies will attract people interested enough in your offering for them you give you their email.
2. Contest Entries.
This is a sure-fire way to get email contacts. But beware, make your contest relevant to what your core purpose and intention are. If it isn’t, your list will be unqualified leads just looking for a giveaway and they will fall off shortly after the contest closes. Having them somehow qualify to participate often weeds out the false leads.
3. A Blog Post or Great Read.
Take your best blog post or page, add some supporting photos, and links and you have the makings of a great freebie. If you can personalize it by adding a questionnaire that qualifies the recipient to be part of the club that requires your advanced knowledge, then you have them ready to buy or participate.
4. A Webinar.
If you use video as a medium to communicate then you have a great freebie waiting for marketing to take over. It may already be available for free, but it requires some searching for people to find it on your site. Take time to add the appropriate links in the comments and on the video itself to your saleable products or services. Put it prominently on your website and watch the leads file in.
5. Check Lists and Cheat Sheets.
Everybody loves to cross things off their to do list. Capitalize on this. Do you have a check list on tidying up your office clutter? How about one on setting up the perfect pantry? Do you have a 20 day fitness challenge you can share? How about the 10 items that every new sole-proprietor can outsource with resources on where to look? Add some colour and images, quotes or links to other great reads and you have yourself a freebie.
You don’t have to be a writer to publish an eBook and it doesn’t have to be hundreds of pages either. If you have content already available on your site that you could package for easy review, then you have an eBook. An eBook can be as simple as your top 5 tricks for using an SLR camera to a collection of blog posts all dealing with the same genre. Be creative and make it beautiful.
We have all taken online quizzes and everyone likes to think they can do well on them or have fun trying. Have you got a financial business helping people manage their debt load? Have your prospects take a quiz. Make sure your quiz is not too long, however. People will drop off if they feel they are going nowhere. Follow up the quiz takers with a great resource for them and they are yours.
8. Shopping Lists.
Consider offering a ‘necessities that should be in everyone’s pantry’ list. Or, ‘tools every grade 5 student should have for the first day of school’. Make it easy for your customers to carry you in their pocket and be reminded of the value you have given them.
I think we all love to feel part of a community and the best way in a freebie is to create a poll. Do you like chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookies? When they answer they receive the recipe for free by just entering their name and email. That is powerful.
How about posing an open-ended question on your website like “Do you want to raise your Facebook presence by 20%?”. If the answer is yes, you will provide them with the answers if they provide their details first. Win/win.
There are hundreds of ideas on the internet and this is just a sampling of what can be done.
