There are several ways to think about your competition. I’m not talking about those resentful, jealous or angry feelings.
I’d rather think about who you are going to be to them.
It is infinitely more productive to think of yourself as the competition of your competitors.
Follow along, I am going somewhere with this.
Isn’t it more fun to think of your competitors being resentful, jealous, and angry at you?
That means you must be doing something right.
To keep ahead of your competitors, you need to keep the competition in mind.
1. Focus on Your End Game
Let us start from the end. What is your end game? You know I am all about setting goals for yourself and your business. But, do you have a plan? You can bet your competition has a plan. If they don’t, you will have the upper hand. Focus will mean you are always working smart. That you understand your unique market niche and you are fulfilling their needs.
2. Start Being First
Go back to the start and get to being first. First in the market with a new product. First to identify your niche and market specifically to them. First to recognize opportunities. First to copyright or trademark your genius. Leave your competitors in the dust.
Your customers believe in you. Take that and nurture the loyalty. They will be the first adopters of your new products. They will be your champions. Don’t forget to keep your loyal customers loyal while you are forging ahead. Let your competitors spin their wheels trying to please everyone, you please the clients who are already happy with you.
4. Don’t Go In Blind
Now you have your focus, I want you to turn the tables and get your competitors in your peripheral vision. Not so you can stress about what they are up to so you can take interest and see the opportunities if they present themselves. They could provide inspiration for new products or even a joint venture. Where they are weak, you can choose to be strong. Don’t rule the competition out or let them out of your sight.
No one else is you. Your customers are sold on you. Keep your passion for your business burning. Passion is attractive and infectious.
So, let’s be the competition. Think like the leader in the industry. Enjoy the spoils of having others follow in your footsteps.
