Use Your Calendar and Communicate
When you want to think about taking a vacation or stepping away from your business, you need to have a plan in place to ensure that your business thrives. I recommend using my Productive Planner and looking in July and August. Map out when you’re not available to work by simply crossing it off. If you’re crossing off a day, be sure to stick to it! This means that you don’t squeeze in any extra work – this will only create confusion for you and your clients. Instead, take these days to do anything but work. I love taking this time for my family, especially since they will be home more often.
I also strongly encourage you to have some time for yourself too. Have someone you trust to care for your kids so you can care for yourself. This can be as simple as letting yourself go on an uninterrupted walk, lunch, reading session or manicure. Whatever you love to do, be sure to make time for it so that you can enjoy your summer as well.
Once you’ve got your calendar set out, tell your clients what your summer hours are and how it can affect them. You can put this information at the bottom of your email signature or you can verbally tell them by giving them a call. Whatever you do, do NOT disappear! Give them a system for contacting you so that you can set their expectations while still respecting your time and theirs. This also applies if you’re going on vacation or taking time off in general.
Be sure to also take advantage of automated booking services such as Calendly. This allows clients to book appointments ahead of time and see your availability at a glance. That way, your clients are guaranteed to find a time that fits both of your schedules.
Set Your Summer Intention
Once you have a realistic view of your schedule, you can see what the top priority is for the summer. Even if you decide not to do any work over the summer, you should still continue your marketing efforts by automating it. You can preschedule content, or what I like to call set-it-and-forget-it marketing, on your social media accounts or on your blog through your website or an automated service such as Hootsuite or Buffer. You can continue the engagement with your clients – just be sure that they have joined your email list, Facebook group or have followed your Instagram account, wherever you are showing up and connecting with people.
Some of your clients may also go on holiday – giving you time and space to complete those projects you’ve put to the side. Work on any projects, build that website or new lead magnet, put together a speaker kit or fine-tune your standard operating procedures. Think of the one thing you want to accomplish this summer to reduce the stress later. You can use my Productivity Planner to help you out – there’s a step-by-step methodology in there to guide you towards your goals!
Set measurable criteria for success to help evaluate whether or not you were productive in the summer. This could be an increase in revenue or perhaps better time management. Whatever it may be, allow it to be your summer intention to keep you focused and productive over the summer!
Set Your Sales Focus
I often hear that people don’t buy in the summer. This is NOT true! We all buy in the summer, so it only makes sense for us to sell in summer! If you aren’t offering anything, no one will buy from you. Offer a new course, product or a summer package – whatever it may be, don’t let this opportunity to make money pass you by!
We already touched upon this, but I want to deep dive into how important this is. This is your lead magnet and non-negotiable part of running your business. A lead magnet is a piece of content that holds value for the people you want to serve. They can access this content by providing their email – which can lead to more loyal and invested clients. It may not seem like much to you, but this is a great way for others to find you and learn more about you.
If building lead magnets and online sales funnels are things you’d rather not do – then have someone else do them for you! There are people who can help you. You can hire someone to monitor your accounts to engage with your audience and maintain your connections for you. If you become quiet on social media, it’s going to take you some time to get the momentum going again. Can’t think of content? Try repurposing past content that gained a lot of traction in the past. Those who have read it already could refresh their memory and further ingrain the information in their head, and those who haven’t read it will get the chance to.
Ask Yourself A Question
We often ask ourselves, “what is it that we have to do?”
I’m going to encourage you to ask a different question. Instead, ask yourself “who can help me get to where I want to go?” Think of someone who can teach you something – perhaps a leading industry professional or your favourite book author. I challenge you to ask them to grab a coffee or lunch with you and get it on your calendar. If you find that your workload is overwhelming, hire someone to help you out. Your clients will thank you for continuing your great work over the summer and your business will still earn a profit during this downtime.
Bottom line, keep your marketing going so that you can maintain your relationship with your clients and still make time for yourself and your family. When you return, you’ll come back refreshed and ready to roll – as if you’ve never left! Use my productivity planner to help you manage your time and your power moves so that you can stay on track with your business growth based on the number of hours you have available.
