People don’t buy what you do – they buy WHY you do it. -Simon Sinek
The universe has a funny way of working sometimes.
Two things happened almost simultaneously to make me stop and rethink how I run my business.
1. Someone asked me a question which I couldn’t answer immediately.
“Shelagh, why do you do what you do?”
2. I stumbled across Simon Sinek’s Ted Talk about Starting With Why.
Both events stopped me dead in my tracks. I knew in my heart why I do this work, but I didn’t know how to articulate it.
So I did what I always do when I need to figure something out – I drove, I walked and I percolated. And it came to me at a moment I was least suspecting it – when I was introducing myself on a coaching call.
In fact it just flew out of my mouth, rolled off my tongue and hit me square between the eyes all at the same time.
I am on a mission to eradicate slave labour among women entrepreneurs.
Just like that.
It came from seeing hundreds of women entrepreneurs come to me broken, exhausted, burnt out, frustrated, panicked and fearful. Hundreds of women killing themselves by working around the clock, not taking care of themselves, charging super low prices which didn’t even cover their costs, volunteering their efforts whilst bringing huge value to the marketplace. And it doesn’t need to be that way.
I am deeply passionate about helping women reclaim and own their time. I am deeply passionate about charging premium prices to premium clients when you deliver a premium product or service resulting in premium profits. I am deeply passionate about helping women accelerate business growth – a thriving sustainable business will afford you the ability to live the life you dream about. It’s as simple as that.
It has been transformational to shift my thinking from the HOW to focusing on spreading my WHY. The result? My work is more purposeful, I am more dedicated, the flame has been reignited, the urgency to get my message out is pushing me out of my comfort zone… In simple terms: It feels great to be working to help others instead of focusing on the dollar.
So tell me about you… I challenge you to leave a comment sharing your why.
If you’re struggling, think through these questions:
-What’s your purpose?
– What’s your cause?
– What’s your belief?
– Why does your organization exist?
– Why is it important to solve the problem your business solves?
And do yourself a favour: Grab a cuppa sit back and gift yourself 20 minutes to watch Simon’s Ted Talk.
Let’s hear it! Leave a comment sharing your why.
