The sun is shining, the ice cream is flowing, the pool is calling and so are your kids. All day. Every day. Loudly. All the time.
Summer is associated with fun, parties and play … so why are so many of you struggling at this supposed amazing time of year? And what on earth can we do about it?
The three most common culprits of the Summer Business Blues seem to be:
1. Loss of Routine
If you are anything like me, you are a creature of habit and routine. During the school year, my days are very predictable and it’s easy to put boundaries around my time to ensure I get everything done. Summer however, put a wrench in those plans. The routine seems to change week by week, and sometimes day by day. Being at the mercy of camps, playdates, park visits and the weather makes it really challenging to ensure scheduled work time happens.
When work boundaries become blurry, when you’re like me, and incredibly task focused and outcome oriented, it can throw even the bravest of lions off their game.
2. Condensed Work Week
Just because you have less time available to work in the summer – doesn’t mean you have less work. It’s just compacted into shorter hours. And the to do list that remains at the end of the day gets longer when you can’t get it all crammed into the time available. I find many entrepreneurs are left with two choices in the summer: either outsource the kids, outsource more work to free you up, or just don’t get it all done. Each option comes at a price.
3. Business Slows Down
Cognitively, as business owners, we all know your business is most likely cyclical – you will have peak times and slow times. For many of my clients, July is s-l-o-w… like snail paced slow when it comes to sales. Some of my clients are in an utter panic because they aren’t meeting their numbers because their customers are… on vacation. Slow months need to be planned for ahead of time. How we weather the slow period is the difference between a successful entrepreneur and a soon to be retired entrepreneur.
There is hope though, folks. You can turn your Summer Slump into Summer Success quite easily.
3 Tips To Shake The Summer Business Blues
1. Shift Your Focus
If you’re buyers have slowed down and are on vacation – then it’s insane to keep pushing as hard as you can to get in front of an audience who is at the cottage, on the dock, with a beer in hand. They ain’t buying while on vacation.
Summer is a great time to shift your focus to business development – learning, lead generation, community building, content creation, and taking the time to work ON your business. Then, when your customers return from holidays, you will be refreshed, recharged and refocused with a stronger business infrastructure, a renewed energy to being value to more people and have a refocused plan to ensure you end the year on top.
2. Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down
You can slow down too. The world will keep turning and the sun will still rise if you take a break.
Give yourself permission to spend quality time with those you want. Take your kids to the pool, take an extra day at the cottage, sleep that extra hour. Give yourself a break too. It’s time to recharge your energy stores so that when your peeps return, you’ll have your A-Game at the starting gate.
Give yourself permission to step out of being client facing, and move to you facing. Take the time to: slow down, exercise, eat better, take come courses to get better at your craft, create the mind space to create amazing value-laden content for your peeps so that when they return you are in a better place than when they left.
3. Feed Your Brain.
Knowledge is power. What knowledge are you missing that will serve you as a business owner? Do you need to know more about marketing? Sales? Hiring and Firing? Copywriting? What do you need to know so you will be a better and stronger business owner?
The best way to overcome the Summer Blues is to feed your brain. When you become more knowledgeable, you become more impactful as a business owner.
