What’s In A Word?
So, we’re coming up on the end of February, and I’m wondering… How are those New Year’s resolutions coming along?
I know. I know. I can almost hear the groans… through the airwaves… as you momentarily put down that Little Debbie. I’ve been there! And I think we all have. You see, it’s taken me a while to figure it out, but I’m not really much of a “resolution” girl after all, and I’d venture to guess, you’re probably not either. After all, if we’re really honest with ourselves, just how effective is some totally blown-out-of-proportion goal that we actually stick to for oh… about two weeks?
So what’s a viable alternative to the pesky resolution that may just set you up for your most successful year yet? It’s called the “power word.” Yes! There is power in a word. And we all know this, don’t we? How many of us can recite the old saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones…” You’re finishing that for me right now, aren’t you? “But WORDS will never harm me.” That little saying, meant to thumb our noses at bullying third-graders, is actually an admittance of how greatly words CAN affect us. Or perhaps you’ve heard the proverb, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Now that’s serious business! Now, to harness that power and use it to drive us through the entire year with intentionality!
What one word could be so powerful as to keep you focused on the very heart of your vision for 2014? It could be anything—“believe,” “create,” “build,” “sow”—whatever word does it for you. Let me use myself as an example. Last year my power word was “wealth.” Now don’t judge! I’m not talking about making my life all about money, money, money here. But I’m speaking of my desire to have a golden thread of richness about my life that permeates every part of who I am, as a mom, a wife, a business owner. Every time I doubted myself, every time things got tough, every time I had a critical decision to make, I revisited that power word and asked myself, “Is what I am choosing right now in alignment with my power word for this year? Is the direction I’m moving truly adding to the wealth in my life that I am anticipating for 2013?”
There is so much power in a word. And I want that power for you too. It’s the power to push you through the year with a determined focus on what you want out of 2014, on your vision for your future. Now that’s power!
I want to hear from you!
Have you ever had a power word? What was it?
If you could pick one word to set yourself up for success in 2014, what would it be?
