In my coaching practice, I spend a lot of time helping my women make that shift from being busy to being productive, we do not have the luxury of time at our fingertips. There are so many demands on us from partners or family or friends. It feels like everybody wants to have a piece of us. How do you run your business with a sense of calm and clear while focusing on just the work that has to be done prioritizing everything? It’s amazing that more of us don’t spontaneously combust with all the things we’re trying to do simultaneously.
In this kickoff episode to our four episode series on productivity, I’m going to focus on your secret weapon to success.
Our secret weapon comes down to a choice
You might think that it’s a system, you might want it to be a process, or you might want to have a printable download that you can then take and implement. But the thing is, our secret weapon all comes down to a choice. It’s the choice of how we spend our time. And the one thing that we often neglect, that we push to the side, that we think just isn’t as important as everything else that has to get done is clarity. But a successful business is clear on what needs doing. It’s clear on how to get where it is that it wants to go. It’s clear on what actions to take along the way.
So how do we shift from the chaos and overwhelm to making the choice for clarity?
There are five steps: being quiet, visualizing success, getting specific, trust yourself, and find someone you can trust.
Step one: be quiet
Number one, you have to give yourself permission to be quiet. That means you need to turn off your computer, you need to turn off your phone, you need to shut the door and you get to have time all to yourself. Now if your initial reaction right now is “that’s impossible!” then I’m going to invite you to notice that you are fighting with your time and that you are making choices that are not serving you.
Fight for the idea that you choose how you spend your time. I’m not saying there are not a million demands on your time, what I am saying is that you are 100% responsible for 100% of the time for how you choose to spend your time. So if your time is not working for you, then I encourage you to go back and think what is it that stops me from taking quiet time and what is a different choice that I can make in order to get that quiet time.
No matter the circumstance that surrounds you, it is absolutely a circumstance, it just is. It’s not good. It’s not bad. It just is. But where your power sits is in the choices that you make, with how you deal with that circumstance. If your initial reaction is getting quiet is not an option for me, I’m going to challenge you to look at the circumstance and see if you can make a different choice that works better for you. When you give yourself space and time to think and to dream. That is where your clarity is sitting.
The more clear you are on where you want to be, when you say, “Oh, well, when I’ve reached the pinnacle. When I’ve reached success when I’ve reached it.” When you can clearly define what it is, all of a sudden the path to get there gets way more clear all the actions you need to take to get there, get way more clear.
Number one: no matter the circumstances, prioritize some quiet time to help give yourself space to think and to dream. And that space is what’s going to help give you clarity.
Step two: visualize it
The second way to get more clarity in your business is to visualize what it looks like. What does the pinnacle look like? What does success look like? Paint that picture, draw it out, write it out, put it in point form for mind mapping. It doesn’t matter how you capture it, but the more clear you are about where you’re ending, the more detail that is in that picture, the easier it is to build the critical path.
“I’m running a successful business and I have a team of people that are working for me, and we’re impacting the world in this way,” that’s a great vision to start with. Let’s take that one more step and get more clear.
Step three: be specific
The third way of how we can get more clarity in our business is by being specific. Let’s picture what it is that we want with as much detail as possible. When you’re imagining a business that truly serves you, one where you operate from a place of joy and fulfillment. You may be sitting here not knowing how to do that. Think about the following:
- How much revenue is your company making? Write it down.
- How much are you paying yourself?
- What is your profit margin on that revenue? What is a realistic profit margin?
- You know that you don’t get to keep all the money that comes into your company. You just get to keep a percentage of it. What’s happening with the rest of it?
- When you think about your dream team, what are the jobs that they’re filling? Write out the job descriptions. Take time to look at the salary that you’re going to pay those people.
- Who is that dream team? Describe who they are. What values are they aligned with? Describe who they are as people and what makes them the right fit for that job.
- What it is that your company is going to do?
What we’re doing is creating the clarity around where it is that you’re going so that when we reverse engineer your weeks and your days, we are 100% clear on where you’re going so that we can make the right choices about the day to day activities. The more specific your vision is, the easier it is to build a critical path.
Step four: trust yourself
The fourth step to getting clear so that you can be more productive is to trust yourself. Trust is such a powerful word in our world. Trust is not as simple as “Oh, yeah, I can make that happen.” Because the minute we layout that big vision, the minute we get more clear, the minute we get specific and we keep picturing it, all of those little Gremlins are going to start popping up and it’s all going to be the “what if, what if I’m not good enough? What if my customers aren’t going to buy what I offer? What if this product isn’t going to sell? What if I’m not the right person to drive this ship? What if I don’t have leadership skills in order to lead a team that I really want to have or that I know I need in order to get me to where that vision is”
When you believe that what you want is possible, no matter how crazy or how huge that goal may be, and that you are the right person to guide the ship, and you trust yourself, all of a sudden, the impossible becomes very possible. What we forget is that in order to make these big visions happen, it’s not coming from these massive big huge actions that we take. It’s all coming from a series of small steps to get us there.
Trust yourself that you are the right person. For every single reason why you’re not – let’s track it. Let’s understand what that thought is and where it comes from. Take out a piece of paper and write all the thoughts and reasons why you are not the right person to guide the ship, or what those voices are telling you, or what the Gremlins are standing in the way with and holding you back. On the other side of the paper, write what it truly is that you want. If you feel like you don’t have any leadership skills, reframe it by saying, “I’m learning how to lead my successful team.” And when you put that word learning, or you put that “I’m developing,” or “I’m beginning to” or “I’m practicing,” all of a sudden you’re removing that need to be perfect from your plate. And when you remove that need for perfection, that is where you can start seeing what it is that you are doing and what you are capable of, so that you can keep making those small steps each and every day.
Step five: find someone you can trust
Once you’ve trusted yourself, tell someone about it. Find someone you trust.
We don’t need to find someone who is going to poke holes in it. But we also don’t want to find someone who is always going to be just telling you what you want to hear. We want to find someone who we trust implicitly. Maybe it’s another entrepreneur. Maybe it’s someone in your network, maybe it’s your coach, maybe it’s your husband. But if it’s someone who doesn’t fully support you, they are not the person to hold you accountable for the vision, because they’re going to help support you to keep your vision safe, which means keeping it where it is right now. People, even though they have the best intentions, will sometimes do their best to protect you from taking the risk because they love you that much and they don’t want to see you fail.
When you’re looking for an accountability person when it comes to clarity, visioning, goal setting and productivity, we want someone who’s going to say, “Hey, you’ve been spending your time doing the wrong stuff,” or “I’m not really sure you’ve got the right message here behind your product or let’s go look at your numbers. Is this the right move for you?”
We want to be surrounded by people who are going to say it straight and champion you in a loving and supportive way which sometimes includes some constructive feedback. So, find that person and share your plans and goals with someone.
