Then you need to listen to this episode, I interviewed the five women who just graduated from Leverage, which is my highest level program designed for women that are building seven-figure businesses. So listen in and get your pen and paper because there is gold in this episode.
Hi, and welcome back to The Road to Seven with Shelagh Cummins. I first just want to thank you for listening today and choosing The Road to Seven as your podcast of choice at this minute. I also want to welcome all of the new subscribers and listeners who have just discovered The Road to Seven. My name is Shelagh Cummins and I help entrepreneurial women just like you to launch, grow and scale their business. It is my pleasure today to be sharing some insights from women who are making it happen, from women who are well on their way to seven figures and beyond in their business. My parting question to my Leverage group this year was, what was that turning point? What enabled you to get the results that you did in the last year? I have to say the results these women achieved were unbelievable from restructuring their company to streamlining everything that they were doing for massive increases in revenue.
One woman had more revenue in the first quarter than she had the entire previous year. I mean, those are unbelievable results, communities growing, impact spreading, pivoting a little bit changing the whole scope of their business. It was a big year for the women in Leverage. When I asked the question of what was that turning point, what enabled you to get the results that you did? I was amazed by their answers.
Give yourself permission
One of the women talked about how the biggest key to her success over the last year was that she gave herself permission to think bigger. She gave herself permission to think about her company as a corporation as something that was larger than her. Up until now, she had only ever viewed her company as being little old, her doing the little old stuff that she does, and then selling that. When we opened up the scope of what it was that this company did, all of a sudden these opportunities literally fell in her lap. The ideas that she had flowed. She started by hiring very key strategic people and hiring not from a place of, I’m going to help a friend out, but hiring from that place of ‘who is the best fit to get results in this area?’
Those are big moves, we always have to hire before we’re ready. When we are clear on the outcomes that that person is going to have on our business and how it’s going to help us elevate our revenue, then all of a sudden, it becomes a little bit of an easier pill to swallow. That permission to think bigger to think globally, to think more about broadening the expanse that she can have through her business. All of a sudden, things are moving for her. And it wasn’t just the marketing funnel. It wasn’t just the way we positioned her company. It wasn’t just the way that she was showing up. It was the internal permission that she gave herself, to be the CEO of this massively growing company and to play bigger.
Believe in your value
Another woman talked about how there was a shift for her but six months into the program, and the penny just dropped. And the penny dropped when it came to believe in the value that she brought. All of a sudden, there was something that made her realize that she’s damn good at her job. When she stepped into that belief, and she was able to have the sales conversations from that place of confidence, and she unloaded a whole new vertical to her business. It is because she is so deeply in alignment with the value that she brings. It’s possible that you’re listening to this today, not feeling on top of your game, not feeling like you really got it going on. Maybe you’re having an off day. Or maybe you’re having one of the power days where you’re right on top of things. When you can see the evidence of the impact of your work, the joy your product brings someone, the impact your service has on someone or someone’s business, when you can see the trickle-down effect of you doing your business that enables you to deepen that belief. When we are in full integrity with the value that we bring, all of a sudden sales aren’t hard. All of a sudden talking about what we do doesn’t feel so overwhelming, because we know the importance of getting the message out and to having people leverage our solution to get them some relief from whatever pain they’re in. So deeply believing in value was a pivotal moment for another one of the women in Leverage.
Choose to take control
The third was really an interesting journey. It’s one that I talk a lot about when we talk about how we manage our time and you’ve heard me say, “You are 100% in control 100% of the time of how you spend your time, because each and every micro-moment throughout the day is a choice for you.” The third woman I want to talk about today has been on this journey of making choices that better serve her and her company down to how she spends her days, where she’s marketing, who she says yes to, what she’s selling, what choice she has behind her pricing and her packaging. Everything around us is a choice. Nobody has zero control over what’s going on. What we sometimes have a hard time seeing is how a circumstance around us is in fact, a choice. And sometimes you’ve got to take that step back so that you can see where you’re making choices that are no longer serving you. When you can operate from that place of having a choice around you, the world becomes your oyster.
You can choose to have a call with someone or not. You can choose to say yes to a project or not. You can choose to make a move in a new vertical or not. It’s all a choice, how you show up is a choice, what you deliver is a choice, what you sell is a choice how you spend your days is a choice, you are in the ultimate power position when it comes to your business. If there’s something that you’re wanting to change, and you feel like you don’t have the choice, then I’m going to challenge you to see where you can make some different decisions. If you find you don’t have enough time to work, well let’s figure out where we can find you the time that you need, or let’s reevaluate how you’re spending the time that you actually have. It all comes down to a choice and when this woman approaches her business in the year 2020, from that place of there’s tons of choices around, all of a sudden the joy of running her business is accessible again. When your business is run from that place of joy, that’s where the magic happens because all of a sudden it’s deeply fulfilling for you.
Step into your leadership role
Another woman in Leverage talked about how stepping into her role as a leader, and being a proactive guide to her team was a game-changer for her this year when she owned the fact that she is a strong leader who can trust her team and enable them to deliver incredible value. She saw the whole level of her agency rise up when she owned the fact that she herself created this business and she was the lead in terms of business growth. All of a sudden, she just showed up differently. She showed up more powerfully she didn’t hide her message anymore. She shouted it loud and proud to the entire world. And people listened. The result of shouting out loud to the world does not only do people listen, but they started contacting her. She now has had to hire even more to deliver on the huge influx of work that’s come her way all because she chose to step into that leadership role in her company.
You can see that these pivotal turning points for all of these women were not the next funnel. It was not the next product, it was not the next marketing strategy. These are all internal shifts that they had to make in order to hit the success that they wanted. Now, you’ve heard me say this before, maybe if you’re a new listener, you haven’t. But Tony Robbins says it best when he explains that 80% of our success is sitting within us and 20% is sitting within our systems and processes. The systems and processes are important for sure, without a doubt. But when we can tap into US, and we can find OUR power that is where your results are sitting for this year.
The fifth woman had the most unbelievable journey as well. One of the things we started out doing right off the bat was getting things off of her plate. It was hard cuz she was hanging on tight because she has a little bit of FOMO or the fear of missing out much like all of us do. Well, what if I don’t take this opportunity? What if I don’t join this network, I don’t want to miss out on an opportunity. She has renamed it to JOMO, the joy of missing out and being able to step back so that she can grow.
When you are in the hustle and the grind and you’re going back to back and you’re pushing and you’re fighting to get results. It is really hard to make powerful decisions based in clarity. When you can slow the train down, step out of that daily hustle and give yourself the grace to have some quiet time, to in fact, preserve and conserve your energy. You all of a sudden are going to be able to make some powerful decisions with crystal clear clarity, knowing that it is the right decision for you at that moment. At the end of the day, there are four words that we’ve got to be measuring our success by.
We’ve got to be measuring our day to day by these forwards we’ve got to be measuring whether our business is on the right track or not or whether this is the time to grow it. The four words are is it worth it? Is it worth it to sacrifice our firstborn in order to achieve a new sale? Is it worth it to have to give up an activity that you love so that you can do an activity that you know is good for your business? We’ve got to be looking at each decision through that, is it worth it lens, because at the end of the day, if it’s not worth it, then it’s not the right decision.
This is your livelihood. This is your raison d’être, which is French for “reason for being” when your business is anchored in that passion, and you’re living your purpose of impacting others, then it has to be worth it for you so that you have that deep sense of fulfillment. Otherwise, you’re just going to be working all the time and scrambling. Is it worth it?
Those were the five shifts, internal shifts that these women made in order to achieve their success. The second part of my question is, well, what do you need in order to carry forward? How are you going to take that success that you had through permission, or the belief in our value, or the choices that we make or leveraging our leadership or stepping back to grow? How are you going to take that keep it going in the next year?
Set boundaries in place
Without fail, 100% of the participants anchored it in one word. This one word is the word that encapsulated exactly how they were going to make 2020. The year that they did it. The word is boundaries. They need to put boundaries in all areas of their life, the easiest boundary to reach out and put in place is how you spend your time, what you say yes to and what you say no to. But we also can book boundaries on the access to us, the access that our clients have to us, the access that our prospects have to us, how often we show up, what it is that we deal with, versus somebody else dealing with.
When we think about that joy of missing out, our job is to preserve and conserve our energy so that we can be ready for that that matters the most. If you are giving away your energy to all of these energy drains, either through actions that don’t serve you, or through people who are sucking the life out of you, or through processes that aren’t working for you, or for doing work that isn’t really feeling worth it, then you’re setting yourself up to fail. At the end of the day, that boundary is yours to put in place.
We train people how to treat us. And so if you’re answering emails, 24 hours a day, guess what people are going to be reaching out and wanting to hear from you 24 hours a day, slow the train down. You don’t have to respond at the moment, especially if it’s not at a time that works for you. They’re also putting boundaries on what they’re implementing in selling. They’re going to pick and choose to sell whatever it is that serves them at that moment at the time of year that it makes sense to sell. You don’t have to be selling everything all the time. Boundaries are sometimes really hard to put in place because we think that if we do, people are going to leave us clients are going to go away, we’re going to lose business.
The reality is a boundary is a protection mechanism for you so that you can show up more powerfully and have bigger impact and make bold moves. And be consistently pushing your business forward and pushing the envelope if that’s what you want in delivering an unbelievable level of service because that’s what people talk about. That’s what people want.
To close this out the lessons that we learned from Leverage this year were so profound. The success that you want this year, my friend is not sitting in your next marketing, click funnel and what tripwire you’re releasing when the success that you’re going to have this year is totally anchored in you, you have everything that you need right now. Let me say that again. You have everything that you need right now to be successful.
I encourage you to give yourself permission to think bigger. I encourage you to really shift into alignment and shift into integrity with the value that you bring to the market. Believe without a shadow of a doubt that you are the best person to help the other person who needs you with whatever problem it is that they have.
At the end of the day, everything that you do, my friend is a choice. You get to choose what serves you step into those leadership shoes. They’re yours, and they’re beautiful shoes to fill. We need more women leaders in our world.
I also encourage you to feel the joy of missing out sometimes say no, you don’t have to go to everything. Step back so you can grow, slow it down. Take the time that you need to nurture your soul so that you can be making powerful decisions, through clarity, powerful decisions that are going to serve you and you’ll being a place that to be able to handle the discomfort that comes when you’re in a place of growth.
Last but not least, let’s identify the boundaries that you need to put in place so that you are showing up as the business woman that you are. I’ll see you next week.
