I dumped New Years Resolutions several years ago. They seemed silly and lost their impact as I kept them anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks then they were forgotten in the vortex of every day life.
One New Years Eve, after several Tequila shots (ahem) my best friend and I (and our husbands) decided to swap our tradition of setting useless Resolutions.
We grabbed the kids markers and paper and began what has become an annual ritual. We mapped out our year.
One of us talked about the year ahead – what we wanted to have happen, where we wanted to be one year from now, what would make us feel successful. While one of us talked, the others around the table drew or captured what they heard, and what emerged for each of us was a word to capture and reference the year.
That year was 2012 – and my word was Believe.
My youngest was 3 months old. It was the year I decided to leave classroom teaching once and for all.
I had built 3 business by that point (A parenting blog, a tutoring company and a corporate training company), each one earning, but none really feeding my passion.
I had always built them with the security that I could fall back on teaching if I needed. Giving up my permanent position at one of Toronto’s leading private schools (full pension, great pay, incredible health plan, job security) was the scariest thing I had ever done.
I had to believe that I was good enough to run my own business training and consulting company. I had to believe the clients who needed me the most were out there. I had to believe the money I wanted/ needed to make was out there. I had to believe I had the knowledge to run this business. So I started monitoring the results of my clients very closely. Was the work I was doing achieving the desired results for my clients? The answer was yes. Which fed my belief that I had made the right move.
It was a leap of faith for sure – one for which I will always be grateful.
And by the end of that year, believe as a feeling was replaced by confidence. Confidence knowing I was on the right track and my business was thriving.
The next year, 2013 my word was Wealth. I’m not talking about making my life all about money, money, money here. It spoke to my desire to have a golden thread of richness about my life that permeates every part of who I am, as a mom, a wife, a business owner.
2014 was all about Abundance for me. Having more than just enough. It spoke to both my need to shift my scarcity mindset to one of abundance, but also to my desire to have more than just enough in my life. More than just enough time, more than just enough space, more than just enough money. I wanted buffers around me in all aspects of my life – so I wasn’t living life under the gun any more.
In 2015, my word was Freedom. Freedom to do what I want, when I want, in the way I want, to get the results I want. I took risks. Some worked, some didn’t. I made powerful decisions in both my business and life. I lived life on my terms and ran my business the way I wanted. And I have never looked back. I invested heavily in my personal development – and also in my business. At one time, I was working with 3 coaches to help me get where I wanted to go. And today I am sitting typing this from the spot I imagined I would be. And I am now set up to achieve my Power Word for 2016.
And this years word is …. drumroll please…
